The following are Spartan Maintenance Guidelines for some of the more common Systems found in many of today's Motorhomes. This section covers Transmission maintenance, air filters, fuel water separators, chassis suspension, axles, hydraulic fluid, and the cooling system.


Transmission Service





Allison Transmission MD3060

Allison Transmission MD3060


  • Transmission: MD3060 (3000 MH - Internal Filters)
  • Fluid Type: Dexron III / Transynd
  • Capacity: Approx. 26 Quarts (US)
  • First Service: 5,000 miles, Main filter only
  • Continued Service: Transynd: Main and Lube filters 3 years or 75,000 miles
  • Continued Service: Fluid: 150,000 miles or 4 years

  • Transmission: HD4060 (4000 MH - Internal Filters)
  • Fluid Type: Dexron III / Transynd
  • Capacity: Approx. 37 Quarts (US)
  • First Service: 5,000 miles, Main filter only
  • Continued Service: Transynd: Main and Lube filters 3 years or 75,000 miles
  • Continued Service: Fluid: 150,000 miles or 4 years





Allison Transmission 1000/2000/2400

Allison Transmission 1000/2000/2400


  • Transmission: 1000/2000/2400 - External Filter
  • Fluid Type: Dexron III
  • Capacity: Approx. 15 Quarts (US)
  • First Service: 5,000 miles, Main filter only
  • Continued Service: Dexron III every 50,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first.

Air Filter Service Indicator

Air Filters


  • Filter Type: Racor Parker Air Filters
  • Service Intervals: Check service indicator regularly (The indicator is a commonly ordered option.)

Service Indicator


  • 5"-10": Normal Range
  • 15"-18": OK, But Nearing Service
  • 20"-25": Out of Service





Fuel, Water Separator

Fuel / Water Separator


  • Filter Type: Fleetguard FS-1242B (Common on Spartan Chassis)
  • Service: Every 12,000 miles
  • Location: Separator is mounted on frame rail or rear cross member





Cooling System / Radiator

Cooling System / Radiator


  • Service Interval: Radiator should be cleaned out yearly
  • Cleaning Method: Spray out debris with water. Use low pressure air to blow out the fins of coolers.

Radiator Hose Clamps

  • Service Interval: Check the torque on CAC hose clamps at every oil change
  • Recommended torque: 45-50 lbs./in.

Coolant inspection port

  • Service Interval: Pre-Trip Inspection.
