Newell Coach Corp. Company Profile

The founder of Newell Coach Corporation, L.K.Newell, was one of the principle developers of the rear-engine motorhome, and diesel-powered motorhome, back in the early 1970's. As the story goes, shortly after purchasing his new Streamline brand motorhome in 1967, Newell drove from his home in Oklahoma to Streamline's El Monte, California factory with a list of improvements. By the time he left the factory, he was the new owner of Streamline, and Newell Custom Coaches was born. Newell built the first gasoline-powered rear-engine "Newell Coach" in 1969, using a Madson bus chassis.

Today, Newell custom-builds their own welded steel truss-type chassis, so that chassis and body are both fabricated for a precise fit. Newell constructs their exterior body using aircraft fuselage construction technology, creating a smooth, rivet-free aluminum body finish. Newall coaches typically use a Detroit Diesel Series 60, or Caterpillar C-15 engine, mated to an Allison HD4060 six-speed transmission.

As part of the company's forward-looking, and decidedly upscale approach, Newell partnered with Porsche Engineering in 2006 to help redesign and restyle their motorcoaches. Some of these developments include higher performance, sleek looking custom molded-chrome trim, Xenon headlights, a larger one-piece windshield, and a distinctly European look.

A single Newell coach takes approximately four months to build, and prices range between $1,400,000 and $1,500,000. Newell coaches are very popular with NASCAR racers, comprising around 30% of their annual sales. Newell does not sell their luxury motorcoaches through a conventional dealer network, and all of their coaches are custom ordered through the factory.
