Fleetwood was founded by John Crean in 1950, and Fleetwood Enterprises, Inc. (FLE) became a publicly traded company in 1965. The "Fleetwood MotorHome Association" (FMA) is an independent, member-operated organization that is limited to owners of Fleetwood products. Fleetwood's motorized, high-end luxury coaches are sold under the "American Coach" brand, marketed as the American Tradition, American Eagle, and American Heritage. Fleetwood's Class A gas/diesel motor homes include the Bounder, Pace Arrow, and Southwind. Fleetwood Class C "mini motorhomes" include the Tioga, and Jamboree models. In the towable 'fifth-wheel' class, Fleetwood markets several high-end models, including the Advantage, Quantum, Regal, as well as their standard fifth-wheel models which include the Prowler Classic, Terry, Terry Resort, Wilderness Scout, and Formula toy hauler. In the towable 'travel trailer' class, Fleetwood has several product lines which include the Mallard, Pioneer, Prowler and Wilderness, and toy haulers which include the GearBox, Nitrous Hyperlite, and Red Line. Fleetwood also builds a full line of folding camping trailers, and ultr-lite models which include the Dakota, Lynx, Orbit, Pegasus, and Yukon. In March, 2009, Fleetwood filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (now FLTW.OB), closing its travel trailer business. Fleetwood's La Grande, Oregon travel trailer plant was sold in a bankruptcy court sale to Northwood Mfg. for $2.05 million (source: rvbusiness.com). The investment firm American Industrial Partners L.P. (AIP) in New York City has also bid $53 million for Fleetwood's motorized division which includes American Coach.
