Travel Pet Product Review
Dog Booties
Dog Booties Overview
At first glance, this product seems like a gimmick or a joke. However, for those of you RVers who seek warm weather in the winter and go to the desert you and your dog will find these booties are a must. The deserts of the Southwest are extremely hard on your dog's feet. The deserts are beautiful, but are covered with stickers, thorns and cactus and will easily get into a dog's foot causing great discomfort and possibly serious injury. Since traveling with our pets is a big part of RVing, it is important that we take the best care of them possible so as to avoid spending time and money at the vet.
The Problem
One of the advantages of RVing is the ability to travel with your pets. Many of us Snowbirds seek the desert warmth in winter and travel to the Southwestern deserts of the U.S. and Mexico in this quest. We love it s do our dogs who accompany us on these great adventures. The problem is that these deserts are particularly hard on our dog's feet. They are littered with small, sharp rocks as well as stickers and various types of cactus plants. The dogs feet can really take a beating when they scamper willy-nilly through these deserts especially off the leash.
The Solution
Although they look funny at first and they may take some getting use to, dog booties are a great way to protect your dog's feet as they romp in the desert or mountains. I have seen some do-it-yourselfers, but have found that the best ones are commercially made of tough rubber or neoprene soles and held in place with velco straps. Some even feature reflective tape so that your pet can be seen in the headlights at night.
Product Use
It is best to get four of these booties, one for each foot of your dog. Just like you probably don't have only one pair of shoes, a spare pair might be advisable should one become lost or damaged. I have found that the best way for your dog to get used to wearing these booties is to put one on at a time and let him/her get used to it that way. Also it is important to get the right size and some of them feature a sizing chart to determine what size will fit and be most comfortable for your type of dog. It is also important to wrap the velcro straps snugly around the dog's legs but not too tight to cut off circulation and not too loose so that they might fall off. A little trial and error will determine the right fit.
